Retell: How Tonga got its name. 

WALT: retell the story of how Tonga got its name adding detail and using descriptive language. 

 

Planning:

Characters – who are the characters?	Maui is a Pasifika Superhero Tonga is an expert fisherman
Setting – where is the story set?	In the vast moana where Maui arrived in Manu’a Samoa
Beginning – how does it start?	Maui arrives in Manu’a Samoa where he meets an expert fisherman named Tonga. Tonga shows Maui his collection of hooks and tells Maui that he can choose a hook of his choice.
MIddle – what is happening?	Maui choses a fish hook that is covered in nicks, scratches, dead leaves and spiderwebs. In return Tonga asks Maui to name an island that Maui will find after him.
End – how does it end?	Maui uses the fish hook and he catches something that he thinks is an octopus but it is an island. Maui remembers his promise to the old man and named the island Tonga.

Make sure you use descriptive language to make the story more interesting. Pull the readers in to read YOUR writing, make it fun! You are going to need as much detail as you can as you will be creating a storyboard later on in the week.
